Candlefish (or "Fish on Fire")

Hooligan, eulachon, Thaleichthys pacificus are so oily they can be used as candles (hence the name "candlefish") or rendered for their oil. Wonderful smoked. Caught a 5 gallon bucket full (280 fish) in about 10 minutes. Rendered oil from hooligan was $50 a quart in 1983. Not sure what it is now. I am hoping to get some good winter pelts for the rendered oil, not spring pelts and copper still shiny, not turning blue. But there is a new tax this year, apparently I will need to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and render unto God the things that are God's.
