The purple may be because the camera sensor is overwhelmed with the Infrared of the Sun. The camera has an infrared blocking filter but half the suns energy is in the infrared band. The visible light is attenuated by the cloud and air significantly but not as much in the infrared.

I took this with the Panasonic travel zoom. it has a optical zoom to 24x and pushed in digital will do 48x. I took a few different shots to get the exposure just right and was pleasant rewarded.
