Wow - what an awesome post! After testing various aspects of the problem I figured out it had to do with the aperture control, and found these pages with Bing. I don't know if I have the heart to do such an intricate repair, but then your excellent walkthrough would make it a lot easier than going in blind.

My 17-85 shows Err99 and I sell it at Ebay. I ever asked me, how the buyer can repair ist. After looking at your pictures I am sure. 1. I would not be able to repair ist by myself. 2. The price for repair they told me in advance is ok and 3 The one who will buy it can do something senseful with it.
