This imagery has been in the forefront so much. Yet this is a unique capturing. It is before the buildings fall and it seems almost self contained and isolated in time. A frozen image that gives scale to the event. The photo captures more than the event. But makes a statement ineffable about time and society. It is an uncanny ability to make a statement and capture the bare image at the same time. There is even in this tragic picture, knowing the lives that will be lost or taken, a kind of serenity which is in many of the other photos. This quality is unique to the photographer. This picture has the capacity to communicate, but leaves us pondering, and with the feeling that we could continue to ponder, other times, upon the same picture. It seems to present a teaching and a beauty as well as present a tragedy. Silence speaks here, and reaches the viewer, deeply. Uncanny. Marvelous. Gifted.
