The Port Melbourne Leading Lights are historically significant as structures surviving from an important visual and functional link between Princes and Station Piers and along with these piers reflect the pattern of shipping activity during the 1920s and 1930s.’ .... Lighthouses of Australia
This lighthouse and its twin, inland, were built in 1924 and together their alignment guided ships into then busy Melbourne port. Not in use today, they just form part of the new Beacon Cove housing estate and are a reminder of the history of cargo and passenger shipping activity here. Now, only huge cruise ships and the Spirit of Tasmania pull in to Princes Pier.
The main commercial Port of Melbourne is situated up the Yarra River, closer to the edge of the city and rail links.
This is a fairly ordinary little lighthouse and I remember, as a child, we could walk out to it along a little wooden jetty - no longer there!
