Esala Perahera 02

Kandy, Sri Lanka

Then come the men with flags and the parade proper starts. The originals of all of these photographs were extremely noisy because there was very little available light (mainly street lights and the light from the flaming torches) and as this had to be taken from some distance away with a telephoto lens, I could not use flash and had to use the highest sensitivity settings on my camera (ISO3200 and 6400) and still increase the exposure the equivalent of another couple of stops in Photoshop. Then I put them through Neat Image and these were the best results I could manage. I have uploaded them at only 650 pixels wide because they are too noisy to post any larger.

Nikon D100 , AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:3.5-5.6 G
All images, except last two, shot at ISO3200 or 6400 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Hi David,
I came here from your very powerful cyclone photo to see this equally strong shot. In the thumbnal I thought it might be the KluKluxKlan. However especially after reading reading your note, the sense of menace remains. I'll have to google Esala Perahera for more details. I tell people that TE is my news source and it's almost true. I do read the New Yorker and look at headlines on Yahoo, but the news media in this country is so intent on shaping my opinions rather than reporting events, that I can't bear to watch. For example, when the Los Angeles Time was recently attacking the cost of medicare, announcing that the cost were unsustainable, it didn't bother to discuss the impact of Bush's tax cuts for the rich on the deficits. Or even discuss how other countries are faring in providing health services for their citizens. Okay, I'm raving again so I'll just wish you health, lave & joy and go googling, Pat
