I suspect he was wounded by another stallion as he was a band stallion. However, there are treacherous canyons with sharp rocks and I have wondered if he took a spill. There is a long gash on his right side. He was walking gingerly when I took this image but seemed alright last year. He escaped the big BLM roundup last year possibly because he lives in an area with deep canyons. The mares and foals were gone.

Great photo That must have been a terrible wound when fresh. His skin now looks like a piece of badly worn carpet! Could it be from a stallion bite or maybe a sharp hoof? Was he using the leg okay?
