This wound was probably the effect of a bite from another stallion. I have images of similar fresh wounds where large chunks of flesh dangle from the rear hind quarter of a stallion that has suffered a severe bite. My wife is so disturbed by the images that I decided not to post them on my wild horse galleries. In fact, the partially healed wound was ripped out again on the same horse 8 months later by another bite.
