After trailing for 2 1/2 quarters, PA took the lead and never looked back. Played before a huge crowd at UNH's Lundholm Gymnasium, it was an electric crowd and great game.
All with my trusty Canon 1D II, most action, non-flashshots were ISO 3200, f2.8, 1/500 with the 70-200/2.8. End of game, flash shots were ISO 800.

<< Wheaton at RWU lax 3.10.12 >>
A cool but mostly sunny early afternoon contest evenly played most of the way. RWU went up by 4 in the 4th but barely held on for the win...
<< LaSell @ RWU D III lax >>
LaSell College visits Roger Williams on a very windy Wednesday afternoon. Lots of shots in here with that golden light of setting sun on player faces, esp in first half from field level. You'll note how quality falls off as the sun sets - I ended up at ISO 3200 f4, my camera's max with the 70/200/2.8 + 1.4x teleconverter.
BTW - compare these to shots in later galleries and note how much better they are when taken from on field level, where I'd prefer to be shooting from...
<< RWU - Salve Regina scrimmage >>
Under partly cloudy, mid-day skies and in cool 20-40 mph winds, RWU scrimmaged Salve Regina on RWU's new turf field. Lots of good light, but it got dark at times; perfect for Aperture priority setting - all at ISO 400 and f 5.6, with Canon 1D mk II, 70-200/2.8 with a 1.4 x TC.
Right click to save, and e-mail if you want printable, hi-rez versions.

<< PAC Hockey 1.28.2012 >>
Pembroke Academy/Campbell High hosted Laconia/Winnesquam on Sat 1/28/2012 at its Tri-Town Arena home rink. It was a 10-1 final for the home team.
All of these are ISO 3200 and shot with my 70-200/2.8. I added a teleconverter early in the 2nd period and aperture goes from 2.8 to 4.0 so I had to use a slower shutter speed, but all in all, not too bad.
<< PA girls Varsity v Plymouth >>
Here's the Varsity game, won handily by the host Spartans.
Ambient light, ISO 3200 with the Canon 1D mk II and the 70-200/2.8 and 85/1.8. I also used Neat Image noise reduction for these.

<< PA boys vs Brady 12.29.11 >>
Played at NHTI in Concord, it was a blow-out win for the PA Spartans. All were shot with ambient light with the camera at its low-light limits - ISO 3200, f 2.8 with the 70-200 and f 1.8 ISO 1600 with the 85mm. There are lots of really soft focus images here that I will delete eventually.
Hope you like them, and leave a comment, and let me know if you'd like hi-resolution versions of any.
<< Portsmouth @ PA Boys 2011 >>
Friday 12/16/2011 was the home opener for the PA Spartan boys, and the first basketball I've shot in a while. I was pretty rusty. I tried strobing basketball for the first time and it was hit or miss. My strobes weren't powerful enough, triggers not 100%, etc - they both failed by the end of the game... I still got a few good ones though:

The fall intersquad scrimmage was played following the scrimmage vs Alumni. I like these far more than the last game -- I took off the teleconverter and shot at f2.8 first at 1/400 ISO 3200, then ISO 1600 and 1/250.
Looking forward to daylight shooting Sunday at Babson - see you all there.
<< RWU Lax v Alumni >>
Under the lights on RWU's spectacular new turf field...
Well, this is going to be a challenge if we play under the lights a lot. Most of these were shot at ISO 3200, f4, 1/200th, so they're pretty grainy & noisy, and it took a while to fix WB and color.
Hope you all like them. I'll post some from the intersquad scrimmage as soon as I can. See you all at Babson... BTW, all of last year's galleries remain available below - let me know if you want anything from them.

Suzanne and I made a marathon dash on the Sunday before Labor Day. Left the house at 5AM, in line at 9:00 and sitting 3rd row upper loge at center court in the grandstand by 10:15. We watched Flavia Pannatta beat Peng of China, then Gilles Simon over Juan DelPotro, and most of Isner over Molovich? before seeing Kirilenko lose to eventual Champion Sam Stroser. Of course they display here in reverse order. We walked out at 10:30 and arrived home at 2:30 AM...

<< RWU at NEC Playoff >>
It was playoff time as Roger Williams played at New England College in Henniker, NH on 4/30/2011. NEC pulled ahead, but RWU rallied late to pull within a goal, but NEC held off a furious push in the last two minutes to win 9-8 and advance. Great season, Hawks...

<< RWU at NEC >>
Played under grey, overcast skies in 20-something windchills at New England College in Henniker, NH.
Despite the freezing conditions, it was a fun game to watch with lots of skilled play on both sides. NEC pulled ahead early and made it bigger at the start of the second half, but RWU stiffened on D and scored a handful to make it competitive at the end.
Most were shot manual, 1/800th, f4 and ISO 1250.

<< Anna Maria at RWU lax >>
It was a cool, breezy and mostly sunny Tuesday afternoon game in Bristol, RI. RWU pulled ahead and ran away to a 19-3 win. There was some great light, especially when the sun got low and golden. Got a few really good ones in this batch - I hope you like them.
<< RWU@Wentworth >>
Under the lights on the carpet and in the cold winds of Boston's back bay - it was an easy RWU win. Oh, it was dark, too. So dark that you should view these as a photojournalistic attempt to memorialize an event, because the conditions exceeded the capabilities of my camera. ISO 3200, f2.8 and the shutter speeds were mostly around 1/200th - not fast enough for lacrosse...
Oh, well - better to have tried...
Anna Maria game images will be up later tonight.
<< RWU lax at NEU 3.19.2011 >>
After scoring 4 seconds into the game, RWU built a small but comfortable lead and it never seemed in doubt. Played in cool & breezy Biddeford, ME under partly cloudy skies that made for some tough light, and on the bluest blue field you can imagine.
<< PA boys hoops vs Souhegan >>
#2 seed PA pulled ahead early, but Souhegan fought back, played great D and won going away. Great season PA & good luck Souhegan.

<< RWU lax @ LaSell 3.9.11 >>
Season opener for RWU on LaSell's turf in West Newton, MA. Man, was it cold! An RWU goal with 1.5 seconds in the first half kept it close and it was tied in regulation, but won by LaSell in OT.
It was overcast and a 3:30 start, on an un-lighted field, so by the end it was so dark that I shooting ISO 3200.
Hope you like them!
<< PA boys hoops vs Hanover >>
PA Boys bolted to an early lead and it looked like the rout was on, but Hanover turned up the D, hit a few 3's and took the lead late in the 1st half. PA staged a solid come-back and won by 5...

Plymouth at Pembroke on Friday 2/4/2011. First time this year shooting the boys, and they are quick. They got up early, pulled away and emptied the bench.
I used all 3 of my lenses, and 95% were at ISO 3200. The 85/1.8 let me shoot at 1/500th but it seemed slower to focus and at f1.8 has a really shallow depth. Alas, I need strobes to do basketball right.
<< PA girls hoops v Sanborn >>
Second attempt at hoops at Pembroke with my 1D mk II, at ISO 3200 for most of these. Solid game for PA's girls as they cruised. I gotta shoot the boys team at home, soon...

<< BG vs Pinkerton NH HS Lax D1 FINALS >>
It was a superbly played game by two very skilled teams. Although BG prevailed 14-11, but for the Cardinal's goalie, Pinkerton would have run up an early lead. After 6 or 7 superb first quarter saves, the teams fell into a contest of two heavyweights slugging it out, as one would score and the other would answer. I think it was 8-6 at halftime and BG had a 5 goal lead late in the fourth.
Pinkerton's Bobbie Datillo won 20 of 24 face-offs, but BG's game plan countered that with long-stick middies and 3 or 4 face-off opponents. Congrats to both teams on a great season and good luck to all you seniors.
All were shot with my 20d and 70-200/2.8 with a 1.4x tc on it. The first half were shot at ISO 1600 but I had to bump it up to ISO 3200 for the second half, so they're grainy and noisy, but Neat Image as a Photoshop filter cleans up some noise.

Hanover scored in the first minute, but it was quickly 5-1 BG and 13-3 at halftime when I had seen enough. I hope put up a gallery of images from the Pinkerton/Exeter semi-final this weekend.
<< Hanover at BG 5.17.08 NH HS Lax >>
A potential playoff preview featuring top ranked BG at home against Hanover. BG scored 6 seconds into the game and set the tone for the day. Hanover had a few flashy moments and nice offensive plays, but the Cardinals dominated in possession, face-offs, loose balls and, ultimately on the scoreboard.
First night lax of the year - I was able to shoot f4 at ISO 1600 for the first half, but removed my teleconverter and went to f2.8 for the second half under the lights. Light was still marginal and you'll see the motion blur since I couldn't get anything faster than 1/400th.

The middle game from Sunday's Verizon Arena Championships, Dover vs Spaulding. Two very solid teams and a back-and-forth affair, won by Dover on a late 3rd period goal. Great season for both teams and congratulations to the winners...

<< Exeter at BG - NH HS D1 Hockey Semi >>
Exeter played #2 seed Bishop Guertin of Nashua in the first of two semi-final games at St, Anselm's College on Tuesday 3.4.08. It was a great game with lots of physical play and great scoring chances. The refs let the boys play and only called two minor penalties all game and BG scored the game's only goal on a power play. Finals are Sunday...

<< Salem@West 2.9.08 NH HS Hockey >>
I was asked by the parents of some Salem players to shoot one of their games, and was able to do so on Saturday 2.9.08 against Manchester West at JFK Arena. West scored first, but it only served to wake up Salem's offense.

I also shot another Salem game (at BG) and that gallery is here: http://www.pbase.com/baklink/salem_at_bg_12608&page=all

<< Hockey East 2007: BU at UMass Lowell >>
Parity reigns in Hockey East this season as the perennial also-rans have their way with the traditional powers. Northeastern is in first place and Maine in last? Who'd a thunk?
BU scored two early and dominated play, but UML scored 4 straight - first in the middle of the second, then to tie it late in the 2nd.

<< Souhegan at Pembroke NH HS football 10.20.07 >>
Top ranked and 7-1 Souhegan dashed the Pembroke Spartans' hopes for an upset win. Both teams scored early, but the Sabers poured it on and pulled away in the 4th quarter. Spectacular NH fall foliage background for lots of these...

<< NH HS Div 2 Lacrosse finals >>
A great back & forth game. It looked like Bow was going to run away with it early, but St. Thomas played a smart ball control second half and pulled it out. I added another 40+ images on Sat. 6/16. Hope you like 'em....
All with my Canon 1D with 200/2.8 on 2x or 1.4x tc. I also used the "Shadow/Highlight" adjustment in Photoshop so we can see faces better - its unbelievable.
