Old Tombstone was a wild west silver mining boom town back in the 1880s. The town is justly famous for the Gunfight at the OK Corral, Boot Hill Cemetary, The Bird Cage "Theater" and the longest running poker game in history among other things.
The name "Tombstone" originated with miner Edward Schieffelin back in the late 1870s. At that time most white men who prospected that area were killed by indians and were never heard from again. Schieffelin was told that the only thing he would ever find there was his Tombstone. Then he made a big silver discovery and thought naming his first mine "Tombstone" was appropriate. The name stuck.
At its peak Tombstone had a population close to 30,000 with about 3,000 legally registered prostitutes. In the 1880s it was the largest town between St. Louis and San Francisco. It all but died by 1892.
