The Baker–Fancher emigrant wagon train—composed almost entirely of families from Arkansas—was traveling along the Old Spanish Trail to California. In September 1857 they were attacked by local settlers and Indians who were later joined by the local militia.
The attacks culminated on September 11, 1857 when, after they had surrendered and were promised safe passage to Cedar City, were suddenly mass murdered without warning. All told, 120 immigrants including men, women and children were killed.
