this woman is a vegetable vendor selling vegetables door to door, walking long distances back and forth every day with the heavy basket, from early dawn to dusk. all this to make a living for the new day to come. they live in far off villages, leave back their children whom they don't see the whole day. with all this very hard life these people are kind and good hearted, always ready to smile, never complaining about anything. An interesting aspect of these studies is that they all find
common features among street vendors. Their earnings vary
between Rs 50 and Rs 80 per day. Women earn between Rs 40
and Rs 60 per day. They work under gruelling conditions for
long hours and are frequently harassed by the municipal authori-
ties and the police. The NASVI study found that around 20 per
cent of their earnings are taken as rent by the authorities. In
Mumbai the annual collection of rent is around Rs 400 crore.
