My Ancestors Church, St Georges, Kings Stanley, Gloucestershire, England.
For centuries my family (Alder)'s have lived in Kings Stanley, England.
On my trip to UK last year June 2008 (from New Zealand)..I explored the village and Church, and Churchyard, and here are some photos of the family church, St. Georges.
There has been a churchyard next to the church at Kings Stanley for a over 1000 years
It is a place of peace and contemplation. It is also full of history.
It contains the moat of a medieval manor house, and buried remains of a Roman Villa, and of course many interesting tombstones and memorials..The oldest monuments were created in the 1600s but people of Kings Stanley have been buried here for much longer, since the 1100s. Their headstones were probably wooden and did not survive the centuries.
The churchyard was originally much smaller, but has been enlarged since the 19th century.
The churchyard belongs to the Church of England and is maintained by the Rector and Church Council of Kings Stanley.
I felt something touched me deeply when I visited this church, where my ancestors had once tread, and where many now rest in peace. I hope to return again one day.

I know exactly what you mean about visiting a church where you know your ancestors have lived part of their lives. How lucky you are that your ancestors had the sense to emigrate to NZ though! ;0)
Dawn, how exciting it must have been for you to visit this place and see all the history and also the gravestone over your grandparent's grave
And to visit the church and to know that your family once walked and worshipped here in this church.
And what an attractive church it is too. You'll have to go back and visit it again. Sell a few lens and save the $$$$s
