I didn't want to buy the corn, but I wanted to give the kid some money. So I tried giving him one manat (half of what he was asking for an ear of corn), and he refused it, thinking I was trying to haggle him on the price of corn. I was trying to explain, through pantomime, that I didn't WANT corn, and I just wanted to give him the money. Finally, after several frustrating moments, the bus driver intervened and the child took the .20 and walked away, cramming the note into his pocket.
