USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor

USS Missouri also known as "Mighty Mo" is now a floating museum docked on Fort Island at Pearl Harbor. It's a newest landmark in US Naval history, besides Arizona Memorial in Hawaii.

Here are some facts about the USS Missouri:

An Iowa Class Battleship
The Battleship was launched on January 29, 1944
The Battleship was first commissioned on June 11, 1944 served in WWII and Korean War
On Sept 2 1945, The formal surrender of Japan took place onboard of Battleship Missouri
The Battleship was first decommissioned on February 26, 1955
The Battleship was recommissioned on May 10, 1986 served in Persian Gulf War
The Battleship was decommissioned again on March 31, 1992
The Battleship was anchored in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on June 22, 1998

my dad was on the mighty mo during the signing of the treaty and he to had a piece of the deck from then which i have now and all his pictures from then

J. Evette Dimm - My father Phares Shimp Vogel served on the Mighty Mo & saw the surrender signed from above. We also have a piece of the Missouri's deck that was taken out to put in the surrender plaque which is still there. My husband & I will be visiting the USS Missouri after our cruise in April 2013. I look forward to seeing the gun my Dad shot.

I would like to know if my father was on the Missouri during the time when pearl harbor was hi or when the Japaense surrended John S Trela seamen first class I think .He is deceased now & he never really spoke of his time at sea

EVELYN BOWSER My uncle Norbert Janning of Carroll, Iowa, was in the Army and was one of the cryptographic personnel who worked on the message of surrender. Would like to have more info of those personnel and anything about my uncle Norbert Janning.

1949-1950 there was a sailor named William James Mitchell, Jr. on the USS Missouri. Do yu have the exact dates of his time in the Navy? Many thanks!

My Grandfather was one of the men selected to be on the Mo during the surender ceremony. He won't be with us much longer, and I am really hoping to be able to find him in one of the photos of that day. Unfortunately I'd need a poster size photo so that he could look and see if he can find himself, and I've had a really difficult time finding such a print. I wish there was a way to get a large poster from the National Archives to show him so that he can pick himself out.

I have heard stories that my Uncle, Claude (Bud) McConathy, was on the USS Missouri at the time of the surrender. I would like to know if that is true. Thanks! Mossrose1908@att.net.

To Judy Ferns, My father was on the Missouri when the formal surrender was signed. I still have the card they issued to all men that were present that day. Love to hear from you. His name was Leon Brooks and her was a cook and a baker.

Jeffrey Fallang - 87 to 91 H Division It is so hard to see her resting but I knew she earned it, by the slumbering souls of the fallen she shines as a beacon for Freedom, and the promise of a better world, lest we forget sacrifices of the those that came before, we remember a proud lady and her crew and all the brave men and women who served our country in War and in Peacetime, USS MISSOURI rides the waves again, in my heart and in my fondest memory.

I enjoyed the pictures. My Uncle David Morrison was a naval officer aboard the USS Missouri when the formal surrender of Japan was signed. By chance, is there anybody out there who might remember this man?
