Hot Air Balloon

This balloon came over this morning about 7am , it was heading straight
towards us and coming down. Luckily I hadn't turned the mares and foals
out yet , these are very dangerous for horses and livestock in general as
they can take fright very easily and gallop straight into fences and fatally
injure themseves . If they come over high enough it is not a problem ,
it's when they are flying low or landing that is so dangerous for them ,
especially with the noise the gas burners make . Unfortunately the balloons
come our way when setting off from the Stratford Upon Avon area and they are
always coming down by the time they reach us , so we have to be on our guard in
early morning and evenings at this time of year when they are most frequent .
If I see one coming I have to get the horses in before they reach us .

I never realized that cattle would go into a defensive position (gaurding calves like Bison do), looked like the offensive line of the Dallas Cowboys, until I saw a balloon land in a field once. It was quite something, and I believe the balloon people put themselves in danger. Great shot.Well done, and very interesting galleries.

Nice framing, very colourful. Hope they don't bother your horses to much.

Like the elements of this shot - the oilseed rape, the sky, the tree and of course just in the right place, the balloon. Nicely done penny.

Ballons are indeed silent when far away. When close they are quite noisy when they blow the flame up. This is a typical Cameron manufactured baloon. The are very colourfull due to their publicity colouring. The nicest event of the kind i have ever seen was the baloon world championship held in Luxemburg in the 80ies. They where hundereds starting together, an incredible spectacle.

Great image.

Fabulous colour picture - but had no idea these photogenic and no doubt fun contrivances would pose the dangers mentioned in your notes.

Good thing you had your camera ready. Over here they're discussing forbidding hotair balloons over Stockholm.

Same here, I adore hot air balloons as was to attend a festival this weekend but due to rain. However never did consider the negative impact they have upon livestock. I certainly can appreciate your concerns.

But, one day I shall go up in one of these beauties.

I LOVE hot air balloons & never considered their apparent danger & dismay to the surrounding nature . . .wouldn't it be nice if the owners could have the wherewithal to inform you ahead of time, but I suppose that is a logistics nightmare for them as well . .lovely shot of an obviously annoying sequence for you =(

Lovely peaceful picture, too bad they scare the animals, our neighbours' dogs react in the same way to balloons, they must think that the sky is falling down...

Wow! Quite a story, Penny. I never thought of them frightening horses, just always enjoyed their beauty. I will look at them a bit differently now.
