After 18 long months without a holiday, we where looking forward to dusting off the old 300D camera and seeing more of out beautiful country. This time we headed north to the coastal town of Cervantes and the Nambung national park, better known as the Pinnacles.
If I had to describe the pinnacles in one word, it would be eerie. A desert, so close to perth, so close to the ocean. To walk amongst these limestone monoliths was both exciting and eerie. It was almost like walking on a distant alien planet, so different the landscape is to anything we have seen before.
As we found out, Cervantes is home to two very unusual natural wonders. The pinnacles are well known australia wide, but the other natural wonder is just as rare which are the Stromatolites located at Lake Thetis. We where awed to walk amongst these ancient 1,200 year old mounds of life. Many visitors see the pinnacles every year yet few even know that there are Stromatolites nearby.

Photographing at the pinnacles is quite difficult. Wide angle lens are your best friend here as you expect, but the hot aussie sun and glare from the ground makes viewing of lcd screens next to immpossible. A polariser filter is a good idea and given that this is a desert, protect yourself thoroughly against sun & wind burn and something to keep the flies at bay is a good idea as well.
