The photos in this gallery are informal comparisons two of my cameras: the Canon Rebel XT (350) and the Panasonic Lumix Fz50. All photographs were shot in raw and processed in Photoshop CS2.

An informative series begins in the third row. The first two images were opened in CS2 and saved as PSD files without processing. Subsequent croppings weren reduced in size and converted to JPG with no image-altering processing in CS2 (other than shifting from RGB to sRGB). Subsequent crops were as similar as possible - and each was created by reopening the original file saved as a PSD.

The Fz50 has a permanently attached 7.4-88.8 (35-420) equivalent Leica lens. My XT was equipped with an 18-200 Tamron XR DiII (28-320) equivalent.

This series of comparisons is far from perfect. The original images are close but not identical in field of view or lighting. Also, as can be seen in the exif data, different apertures were used. Also, there may have been differences in focusing methods. Fo both pre-crop photographs, the cameras were mounted on a medium weight tripod. The XT shot with mirror lock and remote, the Fz50 with hand shutter release (and to compensate) IS-2. Other possible confounds include: cloudy day, low light, differences in focus between cameras.

As time allows, these non-identical aspects will be corrected in a future series of comparisons.
