It was after 4PM on Monday, December 29. I had just finished clearing away my gear from an afternoon shoot of Snowy Owls and Snowshoe Hares; when I saw some movement in the back yard. Two does were on the lawn. The one in the top image has a white marking on her nose that is somewhat reminiscent of a lighting flash, so her nickname will be "Lightning".
In the top image, she is looking at the camera. She obviously heard the clicking of the shutter. In the second image, she is stamping her hoof in alarm…..
Then…..up went the tail….and off she (and the other deer on the lawn) ran. See the remainder of the images.
What I had not realized (until the white flag went up) was that there were 3 other deer in the woods at the end of my yard; and when they fled in alarm; with their respective tails raised, I could clearly see them as they vanished into the deeper woods. Five deer, in total.
