Roman Town House 4th c. AD - summer Dining Room and the Winter Bedroom. This room was heated by a hypocaust system. A furnace was lit against the stoke hole against the east wall and then the hot air from this was passed under the floor between the stone faced chalk pillars. The draught took the heat up through the walls in box flue tiles producing radiant heat through the walls.
