I really enjoyed your galleries. Especially the underwater shots as I'm open water certified...a bit envious I must say! Keep up the great work!

I'm sorry for misspelling your name in my previous comment, Alena. I've spent some time investigating different lenses including the ones you've mentioned that you might consider as an investment. Upon retirement from work, I will likely switch to Canon over Nikon because of what I believe to be the greater availability of OEM lenses to add to the bag. Tim Rucci is a Canon user like you and has made a thoughtful commentary about the lens that I would personally choose as my next if I were using a Canon camera and in your shoes . . . http://www.pbase.com/tim32225/image/84758569 . More commentary about this particular lense can be seen here . . . http://met.open.ac.uk/group/cpv/PHOTO/EF300_28L.html Note in the latter link that the lense and camera are mounted on a tripod in all the images. I believe Tim was sincere in his noting that the lense can be carried comfortably. The hang up with this particular lense is its price which I consider steep. You would be skipping a step if you were to make this choice. I reflect back on my Pentax K1000 which I dropped about $400 on including its lenses back in the late 70's. $800 on my Canon A1 in the early 80's (including an "expensive" tripod which I recently retired) and the $3000 I have invested in my Nikon gear (including an expensive flash). I'm setting myself up to have $10,000 to play with in a couple of years with great expectations. Photography can be an addiction and certainly has been for me. If you choose to go the lesser expensive route, I recommend you get in touch with Tim and get his advice on the best lense choice for you. I'm not knowledgeable enough to have you make a decision that you would surely be living with for at least a few years. The pbase forum would be a great place to get some feedback as well. I have looked at your shots you've added to your bird gallery since my last visit and am particularly impressed with your ability to have captured the Least Tern with the Laughing Gull. I wasn't able to react as quickly as you. The shots you've captured are gorgeous. Very nice work. I want to make CC at an individual image or two on what I would recommend you do differently with the post processing of the shot. You mentioned the DDNWR which I think would be a good visit after you get your new lense. Remember the capability of what you consider in utilizing a teleconverter and autofocus. What you've accomplished most recently is great stuff. Note that your f-stop was high for the shutter speed you were using this week (as was mine). An increase in the shutter speed, while I prefer to use shutter priority, will allow for a higher speed and acceptable light. I will be looking for more megapixels which will allow for the more significant crop when I get my next camera. I'm not sure if the manufacturers are trending that way or with the lense quality foremost.

Hi Elena, It was a very enjoyable morning and early afternoon shooting with you at LKSP. You have an extremely keen eye for action around you and detail I'd otherwise have overlooked. I had lost track of time and didn't realize we were in the field as long as we were. The time passed very quickly. Our afternoon thundershowers were much too early today. Our exit from the park was actually timed perfectly as there was a deluge from the sky when I got back in the car after inquiring about the Ospreys and their relative absence at the park at the gatehouse. The park ranger didn't have an explanation. He noted that the fledgling Ospreys should remain close to the area and that the Least Terns migrate to South America from the park after nesting and believes they make their way to Argentina specifically. I will attempt to confirm that as an accurate point of interest. I've looked at a few of the 646 shots I took with you today to see positive results. I'd like to add you as a photographer to its gallery if you have no objection. The 1/800 shutter speed we were shooting was a little too slow for my liking in the few shots I've looked at of my bird flight so far. I haven't seen the chopper shot yet. I can't wait to see what you've seen. You've certainly got some great stuff. When you were shooting with flash at New Pass, I hope that your camera allowed you to continue to shoot at high speed without the camera possibly reverting to a default setting of 1/200 or slower which is certainly not favorable under most circumstances as we'd seen.
