Nice visual irony. In Italy and Denmark some older houses have doors for the dead: doors set up from the street with no stoop in order to bring out the dead (and presumably up higher than normal entryways to ease the hefting of the coffin). These are a result of the superstition that a ghost cannot re-enter the door through which it's dead body passed. Perhaps this is the same kind of thing? Or maybe that's a sacred plant of some sort and the occupants have carefully avoided it?
That's the best thing about travel - the mysteries discovered and sometimes unveiled.
