Michelle, Chazzy and I made the long hike up Pine Mountain today. Pine mountain was formed about 275 million years ago when two plates of rock collided forming an overthrust. The mountain forms the Virginia-Kentucky border and a hiking trail is under construction along its entire length. We had a great hike and highlights included a Bobcat, White-trailed Deer, Raccoon, and others. A visit to the natural bridge is always a highlight. Along the way we were constantly serenaded by Black-throated Green Warblers and Blue-headed Vireos - the two most common birds of the hike. Overall, this is one of our favorite hikes but certainly one of the most strenuous. Dinner at the Rhododendron Lodge at the nearby Breaks Interstate Park is a nice way to end the day and relax after a day of hiking Pine Mountain.
