Michelle and I spent the morning birding her parents' farm on a reclaimed strip mine site at Guesses Fork near Hurley, Virginia. From the farm you can see both West Virginia and Kentucky. We were hoping to find Golden-winged Warblers in the brushy areas (as we have every year for the past 7 or so years) but this year we failed to find one. Lots of Blue-winged Warblers were found and one Brewster's Warbler gave us great looks singing from the top of a small locust only 25 feet from us. I'm afraid the Golden-wingeds have finally been driven out of their territory by the Blue-wingeds. Other interesting birds included a Greater Yellowlegs and a Solitary Sandpiper at a large mudhole. Cerulean Warblers were everywhere along the ridges and we found 12 during the day. It was a great day to be out birding the Appalachian Plateau and we found around 67 or so species on the day.
