After two amazing days at Magee Marsh, Michelle and I still felt we lacked something in the warbler department. So, we headed north to add one more species of warbler to our trip (and life) list. The weather was perfect, sunny with a light frost on the ground, when we arrived at the ranger station in Mio, Michigan to take part in a Kirtland's Warbler Tour. After a video and question and answer session, during which we impatiently controlled our twitching, we headed out into the scrub pine areas of the Huron National Forest. A couple minutes walk off the road and we had our first Kirtland's of the day, thus ending a 12-year quest. Two other birds gave us nice looks as they sang from dead snags sticking out from the young pines. We both did a life dance while no one else was looking. It was a great way to start the day and by noon we were heading north to Whitefish Bay on Lake Superior.
