Beartown Wilderness - May 6, 2007

Five intrepid hikers topped Virginia's fourth highest mountain on Sunday, May 6, 2007. The elevation at the summit is 4,710 feet. Many interesting species were noted along the way including over 60 species of birds.

Hi Ed,
I appreciate the pictures from the hike. They are really great. As far as identifying the plants, I believe that the plant in the fourth picture is Hellbore (as opposed to Hellebore, often seen in gardens). It is highly poisonous. I can see that it could be mistaken for lady's slipper, but f it is the same plant you asked me about on the hike, the one that was growing abundantly in the stream channels, it would be hellbore. As far as the purple trillium, there are a number of purple trilliums, as well as some that start out as white, and then turn that color as they age. I wish I had seen this one. Can’t put a specific type on it.

Mr. Talbott,
In viewing the slides concerning your trip to Beartown I would like to offer a few suggestions about plant identities.
Slide 2 is definitely a violet, my guess is bird's foot violet.
Slide 3 is an Alexander (genus Zizia) a plant in the Parsley family.
Slide 4 looks to me like yellow lady's slipper, Cypripedium pubescens. From the size of the group shown, you have quite a find. While not rare yellow lady's slipper orchids are relatively uncommon.

COuld you give me more information about where the Cave at the Cove is? I am on the Bristol Bird Club list as Bill Cawood, b_cawood@yahoo.com
