THE AWAKENING


The Awakening sculpture. The five part cast aluminum statue was created by J. Seward
Johnson, Jr., which depicts a 100-foot man half buried alive trying to free himself from he earth.

This statue is definitely a site to see in person.

The following images are of The Awakening at Haines Point (Tidal Basin), Washington, D.C. On February 20, 2008,
this amazing statue was moved to the new National Harbor in Fort Washington, Maryland.

The artist sold the statue to the National Harbor.

I will be getting out to the National Harbor soon to capture images of one of The Awakening so you can see what it looks like in its new home.

I fell in love with "The Awakening" years ago at Haines Point. It is still spectacular, but the Giant seems crowded in his new home.

Hey,

I first saw this in a issue of Running Mag. And I've always wanted to view it but never knew where it was.

On vacation at National harbor in Fort Washington, Maryland, I happen to go for a walk and thought to go on the beach. Oh my goodness to my surprise was "The Awakening"!!!

I was in awe and just blessed, blessed, blessed!!! I didn't have my camara but just stood there captivated by this statue. It is so awesome in person....One MUST see it in person...You must!

I am going to D.C. in June to visit my uncles. I have to say out of all of the memorials in D.C. this piece of artwork has always resided in my memory of my past trip.

Great Photos. The last time I visited the sculpture was 1988. ALthough I have been to D.C> several times sense then, I had not revisited. Had a flash back today of that senior trip when I was first introdcued to this massive piece of art. Thanks for shareing it!

The last time I visited The Awakening was in 1980. I was on a date with my high school sweetheart. We had a picnic dinner of Chinese food beside the sculpture. I now live in NYC and will be visiting the giant this year at his new location in Fort Washington. By the way, I will be there with the same high school sweetheart for a reunion!!!

Saw it today at National Harbor. How sad to see it adorning that Disneyesque abomination of a development. I guess the NH developers thought they would get 'Instant Culture' by ripping this sculpture from its rightful place. Haines Point was the perfect spot for it. Well, at least my daughter got to play around it while it was there, and the artist got paid. Shame on the NPS for not buying it where it stood...

I was just down in DC this week and saw "The Awakening" in it's new location. It is done very nicely right at the pier at National Harbor. I think you all will appreciate the new location. And as always, it looked spectacular.

I first saw this sculpture in 1983, it is quite an experience- especially at night. It was not in the safest place to visit it at night but it was worth it. I can't believe it has moved! I will have to go find it. A truly remarkable piece of art.

Unfortunately it's the demon god baal the freemason's are so fond of. I recommend watching the documentary riddles in stone to learn more. You can find it uploaded to youtube, google video etc.

I visited The Awakening during a class trip in 1995. I was thrilled to learn my recent business trip to the D.C. area would put me even closer to this work. Of all of the historical and government sites I viewed during my school trip, this work stands out the most. A must see in person!

I was just there today and it is gone from Haines Point. I'm sad and yet happy it is moving. Sad because I liked taking out-of-town visitors there while showing them the sites of the city. Happy now I can see it any time of the year not just when the road is open to vehicles.

We were just there today and wondered why it was so crowded....just thought it was the holiday weekend. I told my adolescent kids all about it and they finally "woke up" when they saw it. I remembered seeing it when it first was first installed! I heard a presentation on National Harbor and then learned that they bought it. It does seem a shame but that project is going all out to be a real show stopper...fireworks at night, ferry boat rides to and from Alexandria, huge convention hotel, expensive condos, retail, etc. It will be interesting to see where "Awakening" is installed!

According to a recent article in the Washington Post, the statue will be moved starting Feb. 20, 2008. I read a lot of comments that were admonishing the National Park Service for letting the statue be moved but here is the bottom line. The NPS does not own the statue, it was on loan to them by the artist. The artist decided to sell the statue for $750,000 to the National Harbor project in Prince Georges County, MD. I have heard that the artist has final say over where the statue can be displayed. Just the thought of it not being at Hained Point makes me a little sad. It was always one of those little hidden secrets that most outside of the DC area never new about.

I hear in the news(02/13/08)that The Awakening is going to be moved from DC. Why? The current location (DC) is the best place. People visiting the national capital can visit and see it. Moving it to Maryland or out of DC will not get the publicity that it is currently enjoying and many people might not be willing to travel far (out of DC)to see this great sculpture.

As of October 28, 2007 it is still located on Haines Point. I, along with 30,000 others ran by it during the 32nd annual Marine Corp Marathon.

The Statue is now located at the national harbor. Believe it or not.. its been on the selling block for years. haines point is not wut it use to be and many people dont really travle thier alot these days.. it will be the focal point on a little beach of the new national harbor. where millions of vistors/locals will live, shop, eat, party, fish, boat and just injoy the statue period.... its only 5-10 mins from haines point lol.

I too am a huge fan of The Awakening, taking every guest to view it as well as making it a part of regular biking and walking routines. To the best of my knowledge NPS did not communicate with DC government or residents in making the unilateral decision to sell this DC landmark to National Harbor for $750,000. The rumor is that NPS also rejected Mayor Fenty's offer to buy the sculpture in order keep it at Haines Point.

does any one know when the "theft" of the statue is to happen. please share any efforts you are aware of the keep the Awakening in DC or at least make a public protest. I am sure there are many like myself who would be willing to at least sign and circultate a petition to their e-lists. Petitions/letters could be forwarded to Congresswoman Norton, Mayor Fenty and DC Council, as well as Maryland public officials, particularly if it were done through the internet.

I lived in the DC area in 1988-1990, and the one thing I miss the most is going to see "The Awakening". It is just amazing in person, all of the intricate details. It is well worth seeing over and over.

Not sure why they are moving this sculpture to MD. Its a tourist attraction. Although I have lived in MD my whole life I think this should remain in DC. I have soo many pictures of my daughters playing on this. Its a landmark, and I still cannot visit Haines Point without stopping at the sculpture...I truly think this will be a less viewed piece of work being placed in MD...Most tourist do not make it to MD and will definately be missing out on something special.....

Frank, if you need a perfectly focused picture to convince you to visit a site like this, perhaps you should just unclench. These shots capture exactly what they need to. If you want it in perfect clarity, actually go there and take your own damn pictures. Sheesh.

A delightful Work. I got a very similar sculpture in 1976 from an Isreali sculptor Yokai Givon who made it at the Museum School in Boston. It was about the same size, had the same anguished face shape, but with 2 hands, one like this one and one lying flatter and more open. It was not nearly so realistic. We placed it in our large front yard but it drew so much attention, including guys bringing their girlfriends to see it and screaming in the middle of the night that we moved it to the back yard. Unfortunately it was made of steel re-bar covered with chicken wire and burlap covered in cement. The burlap eventually rotted and the art was lost. Hope this lasts a LONG time. It says a lot.Thanks.

I lived in DC for 10 years before moving to Madrid, Spain. I came across this site after seeing if I could see the statue on Google Maps (I can) and then doing a search on Google for The Awakening. I love this statue; whenever I had a new visitor coming to town, I would take them to see the statue in the middle of the night. Man, would they ever get creeped out. It was always a hit.

I just saw the sculpture yesterday 8/17/06 by a mistake. I was lost in the nearby park and all I saw at first was a Giant Hand and then a Giant Knee. It scared me so bad, but as I got closer I saw children playing around the sculpture and realized that it was a statue in the sand. I am going to take my children to see it as soon as I can. I've been living in Maryland for five years now and worked in DC for three of those years and never heard anyone mention anything about the sculpture. It is an amazing sight.

When I lived in the D.C. area, the Awakening was on my "tour" for out-of-town visitors. Twenty-five years later my sister just called and said she and her family were going to D.C. this fall. One of her vivid memories of her earlier visits was the Awakening and her kids wouldn't believe there was such a thing. I pointed her to your gallery. Neat pictures - brings back memories.

Dear April. I was very surprised to find The Awakening on your site, I visited it in 1981 on my first visit to Washington,we were taken there by a guide. When making a second visit some years later, I tried to find it on my own, but nobody seemed to know anything about it,I found it very striking and very effective. My wife and I are planning a visit in Aug/Sept this year, I have often spoke about it to friends, and I am so pleased to have found some information and your excellent photographs, why such a thing as "The Awakening" is unknown to Washington people, beats me ?. We will enjoy our next visit thanks to you. I have lived in D.C. for about a year now, and have never been to see this sculpture. I am going this weekend! From a friend's description of the sculpture and the pictures on this website it was clear to me what the sculpture is a rendition of. The Creation of Man!!Genesis 2:7 Man was made from the dust of the ground. The title refers to the awakening of man.

I am a retired History teacher. For years I went to D. C. with 8th graders from Ft. Myers, FL. This statue was always one of the high points of our tour. Usually we stopped here on our way to the airport - what a fantastic experience in all ways for our last day in the Capital. Please try to stop, touch it, climb on it, and just look and dream. I am not sure if there is a metro stop nearby or not. It is located in Haines Point, which is right across from the Washington Marina and Wharf. It is right around the corner from The Jefferson and FDR Memorials.

I have been on "temporary duty" in DC for almost a year, and do photo essays as a hobby. I discovered "The Awakening" by accident on one of my exploratory outings. I've been back several times since with my wife and out of town visitors. All have been suitably impressed. I do not understand why the sculpture is not more widely noted in Washington tourist media. In my photo essay summary, I noted it as a "must see in DC". Your pictures are great. I'll have to go back and shoot some more.

I had the honor of seeing this sculpture for the first time in 2000. I was blown away! Now when my friends tell me they are going to D.C. I tell them they have to see it. It's difficult to explain and almost impossible to appreciate unless you see it in person, then your breath is taken away. I also hear that it is phenominal from the sky, as planes pass by to land at the nearby airport. That I would love to see one day.

My dad helped design this sculpture. I remember when I was a kid playing at the sculpture studio where it was being built - these amazing hands... he put me to work mixing the plaster to make the casts... good memories. Thanks for the photo gallery.

I used to go see 'The Awakening' as a kid, every year during the Cherry Blossoms with my family, until my Grandfather couldn't drive. Now I'm going to do a report on it for my Art class. Never thought I would ever think about it than that it was just something cool to climb on and take pictures with as a kid.

I remember visiting the statue for a field trip as a kid... but I never remembered it being called the Awakening statue. It made me feel kinda wierd because my friends would talk about "Oh the Awakening statue used to scare me as a kid... it still does" and "It's the coolest statue I've ever seen!" but didnt know it was this one until I found your gallery. I remember sitting in the open hand and tracing the countour lines haha. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I saw this when I visited D.C. back in the early 1980's and just recently came back to D.C. to find it because no one knew it existed and I couldn't remember where it was until a man at the airport told me to look out the window across the river.

I made a trip back there with my son 6 years ago and couldn't find it. I am planning to go again, hopefully soon. I was soo happy when it was shown back in the 90's movie "The Net". I had proof of its existence!!!!

I used to drive a bus and the roads in DC were closed down. So, I seen this before and said, you all want to see something special? Now these were Jewish ppl. I didnt know what to expect. So, I slowed down to nearly a stop to change lanes. DC drivers arent very friendly. But I finally made it in the park. And do you know they loved it. Said it was the best thing they seen in the whole tour. That made me happy. And if you never seen this in person, if you ever get there, look for THE AWAKENING. Its plain awesome.

i actually went to see this sculpture last year, and it was amazing. at the time id never seen it before. when i got home, i had to find out where it was, i was on tour, so we were making a quick stop. hainse point is beautiful, and would gladly go back.

Very powerful. Does it symbolize the awakening of the American wrath or something? Maybe that someone has disturbed the giant's sleep, and he's about to show the evil-doers who woke him up that they've done something bad? Or is it something else? I'm just wondering...

Wow April this is a wonderful piece. Never heard or seen it before. Not a big fan of statues, but this one is very interestings and well done. Thanks for sharing, you did a great job in the presentation.

I enjoyed all of your DC images. It made me go back and look at my images from last summer. I have never seen 'The Awakening', however. I will have to look for it when I go back.
