Photographic Exercises







According to John Szarkowski, the photographer learns in two ways:
first, from a worker's intimate understanding of his tools and materials;
and second he learns from other photographs, which present themselves in an unending stream.
He quotes Baudelaire, who said: "This industry, by invading the territories of art,
has become art's most mortal enemy,"
and adds that the new medium cannot satisfy old standards.
The photographer must find new ways to make his meaning clear.
These exercises are based on Szarkowski's ideas which he elucidates in his book,
"The Photographer's Eye".

I saw your Szarkowski quote the other day when I was dashing thru the populars; he's a fabulous inspiration, isn't he? I've known him for a number of years ... there's a photo of him in my "visage" gallery that I made of him during a talk he gave last fall.
Szarkowski is a funny guy; he also says it's not useful to dissect a photo "to explain crudely what the picure ... explains ... what conceivable purpose would this barbarism serve?" ("Looking At Photographs" 1976)
What can I say about your photos? A beautiful collection and ripe with painterly meaning for me...

Ray, I love those exercises. It reminds me of the time I learned piano (which I did for 12 years... a long time ago). I did scales, studies... I believe in it!
But your exercices are much more creative than my old scales and Études... ;-) (well, except for Chopin's Études of course)
