The beautiful Kilclooney Dolmen dates from c 3500 b.c and is regarded as one of the finest examples of a portal tomb in the country. It’s impressive capstone measures 13 wide, 20 feet long and stands over 6 feet high. This makes it one of the largest examples in Europe and probably weighs well over 100 tonnes. The portals support the capstone which looked at from different angles resembles a whale, a dolphin, an alligator, or any one of many other things depending on where you stand and your own imagination. A dolmen can also be called a portal tomb or megalithic burial chamber and these are the oldest type of monument found north west Europe. Just after I arrived the sky took on a dramatic shape as if some kind of mysterious energy was being released from the monument.
