Some time ago I was approached by my local club, Monaghan Photographic Society to do a talk on Composition for the club's newer members. As that went down well, someone suggested that I might put the basics of the talk online. This gallery is an attempt to do just that.I fully realise that many photographers on PBASE certainly don't need me to lecture them on how to compose their images but if this project turns out well perhaps it might be of interest to your friends or someone you know who is just starting out to explore the wonderful world of photography. A number of guidelines can be used for photographic composition and these have been proven to work. However don’t feel the need to use them for every picture you take. Put them into practice, see how they work and commit them to your subconscious. Composition should be an instinctive act born out of your own visual awareness, not something done to a formula although, with practice, the ‘guidelines’ you have learned will emerge if and when they are needed.Finally 'rules' are sometimes made to be broken!
