These Hakka women used to work so hard. I often used to see them with their baskets laden with bricks or rubble. They were short, stocky and very strong, often with the gold tooth.

Thanks for the description and I will update the caption accordingly. This is from a slide I bought from a street vendor in the late 70s.

From the chinese characters on the water buckets,I know the background of this photo. There are 3 chinese characters, "three happiness club" painted on the water buckets the Hakka women carrying. This club belongs to a village in the Yuen Long district, called "Tsun Ching Sun Chuen, which means Righteous Village", set up by the Hakka people long time ago. Hakka people means "guests" coming from north China to settle in HK.

They worship the Tin Hau, Goddess for protecting the fishermen, and celebrate her birthday on Lunar calendar 23/3 every year, around mid April in western calendar. The women and the boys were carrying things for the annual procession to be held downtown Yuen Long for the celebration.

By the way, did you take the photo yourself? If you did, you should have witnessed the happy and exciting atmosphere the long procession brought to you!

This is clearly in the NT somewhere. On closer inspection I think I agree with your comment. Some kids are wearing hats one is carrying a flag. What festival or event do you think they are going to ?

These women were not coolies; they were Hakka women in their traditional costumes and they are known for their hardworking working attitude. So these women were just carrying some heavy load for a local Chinese festive procession.
