I agree with you that the frame here is terrible.
This is a picture from my early 20s so it is about 20yo as now I am 43yo. I decided to leave the image unchanged as it is in the fist wet print and not to do any Photoshop editing for two reasons:
1st because after 20 years the boy that took and enlarged this picture had nothing to do with the man that I am now, so this picture is not really mine.
2nd because this print at it's time had 2 very important awards in international photo contests. Seems that with times also aesthetic criterias change and we change too.
The problem with this image was the foreigner man/tourist in the background who was out of the picture's mood and there was no better way to hide him at that time than burn, dodge or framing in the darkroom. I decided a combination of all the above but I was never happy enough with the result.

I really like those two men and their "pose" and face... But I am not a great fan of the framing... What would the picture look like without it?
