Search and Rescue Training

Part of my job in Field Safety includes being on the Primary Search and Rescue Team. We work with our Kiwi counterparts from Scott Base (see maps) and together comprise the Joint Antarctic Search and Rescue Team (JASART). We could be called out anywhere on the continent, and train throughout the season for a wide range of possible incidents, including helicopter and plane accidents, vehicles lost in white-outs, and of course crevasse rescue and the like.
From community volunteers we select a Secondary SAR Team who would help us and will morph into the Winter JASART Team when us summer-only folks head for warmer climates.
If we in Field Safety do the rest of our jobs well: teaching people to be safe in the field and acting as safety managers in the field with groups, then we have few SAR call-outs (which is usually the case).
This photo is from a Secondary SAR Team training day, extracting a "patient" from a crevasse and preparing to lower him down a steep glacier slope. More photos will appear after I take them during the '06-'07 season.
