Our Lady of Guadalupe, Tortugas, New Mexico 2006

Every Decemcber since the mid-1800's the village of Tortugas, New Mexico celebrates it's annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe. On December tenth the festivities begin with a procession for Our Lady of Guadalupe from the Capilla to the Casa del Pueblo. A velorio takes place throughout the night with dancing by the Danzantes. On December eleventh the people from the community make a four and a half mile climb up the Tortugas mountain where mass is held at eleven o'clock. On December twelfth after a morning mass dancing takes place throughout the day by Los Indios, the Danzantes, the Aztecas Guadalupanos and the Chichimecas.
