Día de los Muertos en Michoacán 2009

The last time I went to Morelia and Patzcuaro was 1992. I couldn't believe I hadn't been back there sooner. I felt as though I was on a magical, mystery tour in these two beautiful cities. In Morelia the Secretary of Tourism had an exposition of Catrinas from Capula. I had never seen such beautifully, executed pieces of sculptures in all of my many travels to Mexico for Día de los Muertos. Another delight in Morelia was the Horno Los Ortiz bakery. There are two of these bakeries in Morelia. One is in the historic district whereas the other one is located next to the market. Both of these bakeries featured figurines made out of bread. I spoke with the daughter of the owner. She told me that it takes her mother over a year to make these figurines. The bakery had the most beautiful papel picado that I had ever seen alongwith beautiful pan de muerto. In Patzcuaro, a Tianguis or indigenous market was taking place on the Plaza Grande known as Don Vasco Square. There were the most beautiful arts and crafts from all over Michoacan. The quality of the workmanship was exquisite. Everyday I would see something that I hadn't seen before. El Día de los Muertos was simply magical. All the cemeteries around Lake Patzcuaro had different styles of decorating the graves. It was a serene experience. Overall, the trip was a visual overdose from the architecture in Morelia to the festivites in Patzcuaro!!!
