Indigenous Dancing in New Mexico

Indigenous and local dances take place year round in New Mexico. The dances that are featured in this gallery are from Jemez, Tortugas, Abiquiu, Alcalde (including the female Rainbow Matachines of Alcalde) and Ohkay Owinge, New Mexico. The photos of the children were taken at a Pow-Wow in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The last group of photos were taken at the Gallup InterTribal Ceremonial.

Ann,
Are you aware of the Gatering of Matachines this friday and satrday may 16-17? We, the Tortugas Danzantes, will be dancing on saturday at 1pm for about an hour. The gathering is happening at the Mexican Culture Center in Albuquerque (Cesar Chavez and 4th, I think). This is an unusual gathering and probably a once in a life time event. We debated a long time about accepting the invitation because of the reason we dance in the first place i.e. prayer vs. tourist show. Anyway, would like to see you there. Hope you can make it.
