The natural make up on the girl's face is called "thanaka" like the tree from which the paste is made. You have to wet it and put on your face.
Women and children use it to protect their skin from the sun and to soften it....
The kids seem to embrace Thanaka with more enthusian then the adults. Their designs are much bolder, and ultimately more memorable. I love this image, Anna -- the flowers in the hair, the serious expression, and all that makeup create a truly incongruous mask, one very emblematic of old Burma. We both had much fun working with this subject because it offers such great opportunities for incongruity. Here's her counterpart, from my own journey to Burma:http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/40192306. Compare her bold display to the more refined display on the cheeks of this teenager athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/40171960
