Jen, I rode over this bridge every day for several years, but never did it look as majestic, powerful and beautiful as it has through your eyes. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent, and opening my eyes to unforeseen images. I also enjoyed reading Phil's comments and advice and these tuned me in to things I had not focused on. Cheers!

These are very beautiful images. Good job! Just one thing though, viewers really don't get a sense what the bridge is really like. I bet the bridge does not look like this 95% of the time when one walks up to it. How about a wide angle shot during the day time showing the heavy traffic flow. Sometimes it pays to step back from being artsy. The ordinary can be beautiful too. good luck

Dear Jen, OMG, a lunch with Jen? You ain't teasing me right? Regardless, it still looks like one since we are 12 hours apart. A lunch is a dinner here, or vice versa. =) Now that the deal has been done ;-), I wish you would like what you're going to hear about, my 2 cents, Canadian. :) First, I believe the current vertical layout works very well for a "portrait" monitor, but probably not the many average "landscape" montors. Secondly, if I recall correctly, the original gallery had many more photos, all of which are as beautiful. By displaying more as a whole and in one screen view, it was simply overwhelming stunning, stellar and spectacular. It was more like an entree than an appetizer. Oh my, am I greedy or what? :D Yours, Charlie

Marek, It was a great experience shooting this bridge, and I was struggling hard to bring this bridge to a new vision every time. I made many many pictures of this bridge and they were displaied before as individual pictures, but now Phil came helping me to sort them out and compose them as a story! I was so excited to see the result! And I will later with Phil's help to write introduction and captions for this gallery to make it a real photo essay! "The Bridge" by Ian Banks. Ok, I will keep that in mind and will look for that book (if I am allowed to buy it online from China.) Thank you for your "constructive criticism" Marek! I never notice this problem before, but now I see some of them really lack of support on the bottom..Hahah....Hope they can still stand still in the pictures~~ Charlie, You still like my original gallery? I had about 50 images before in this gallery, I know it is pity to see only a small part of them now, but what I am doing here and with my whole pbase gallery as well is to keep only the best pictures that can tell some stories. I probably took out 2/3 of my pictures and leave only about 200 images now. Hope you can still enjoy them and tell me what they mean to you if you have time. You have been long time supporting me and my gallery, thank you so much Charlie! I will buy you lunch when you come back to Shanghai next time!! :) Jen

This gallery is a very good example of a series of individual images making one whole. Something like this is a great indulgence for the photographer, but it also tests and exposes for all to see the artist's creative mettle. Since the subject matter is well-known, the viewer has higher expectations of seeing something different and visually-pleasing. You have definitely achieved all this here; in the aesthetic, but mainly through story-telling potential you have sparked in our imaginations. As Phil points out, some of your images here are loaded with symbolisms, eg the fire, and the gallery is rich in varied cultural references, eg the time-lapse traffic or starlights. At once mysterious, and fairy-tale like, it anchores our thoughts to that very powerful symbol, the bridge, and then takes us to the other side... If you get the time, read 慣he Bridge�, by Ian Banks. Finally, I have one bit of constructive (pun intended ;-) criticism. In some cases the lack of true vertical, perfect symmetry, or attention to the bottom of the support, weakens the visual strength of the bridge. It's just a technical thing, or maybe just a 憁an� thing ;-)

You are the best teacher ever!:) I am sorry you have to scroll forever to read comments, but me and Leo don't have that problem, And I use the same style sheet in all my other galleries, do you find the same problem with other galleries too? I don't know actually how to "edit" it to make it work for you but I did change something, please let me know how it shows now! Yes, we will work on the titles and captions, let me finish work on my hands now and get to that soon! :) Jen

Jen, Think about reworking the format of this page -- at it stands, at least on my monitor, you have to scroll forever to read the comments. I think you just need to check some box or something on the "edit" page to fix it. Meanwhile, I am still looking forward to helping you finish this remarkable essay by working on the headlines and captions with you. All I need is the basic info for each picture plus anything you might want to add in the captions about the making of these pictures. I'm ready when you are. Phil

I read this exchange between you and Leo, Jen, with much pleasure. I am honored to have been invited by you to help edit your work, and I thank both Leo and you for acknowledging my efforts here. However I still insist that the the real reason why this essay works so well is because of the meaning that Jen expresses through these images. Photo-editing is a discipline that adds meaning to photographs by weeding out redundancies. It also involves the art of sequentially adding pictures to each other to tell a story. That's what I tried to do with Jen's marvelous pictures here. But the best photo-editor in the world can't add meaning through cumulative sequencing such as this if the images themselves fail to tell a story. That's why I must give all of the credit to Jen herself. These photographs are remarkable. My role here was simply to "uncover" these gems by separating them from a mass of less effective photographs, and then putting them into an order that made sense. If my contribution to this gallery can help turn you into a tough critic, as well as a better editor of your own work, Jen, it was time very well spent. Congratulations, my friend. This is only the beginning. Phi

You know that I always feel grateful deeply in my heart for everything teacher Phil has taught and helped me and if wasn't for him, I would still blindly seeking my way to understand what is ture photography all about, and most likely I may actually give up photography before I find the answer~~You knew that Leo, I was so close to give it up but here he is, my dear teacher Phil, evokes all my dreams, shows and leads me to the world of expressive photography. Bravo~ If it is to be scored 100 for this gallery, I would give 50 to Phil. As I always believed, people need to be recognized for what they've done, especially when it comes to nice photographs like yours. When I saw your work, it's just like seeing magic because I was there physically when you took those pictures, but to be honest, I didn't even come close to imagin what could have been made. When Phil comes into your life, your photos are finally been woke up, and tells wonderful stories of their own. There is an old Chinese saying: a horse that can run a thousand miles may only be recognized by the wise horseman. I can feel how phil sees your photos after read his essey. You should put a proper creit here to recognize Phil's work. Maybe this gallery should be called, Gate to the Lions, Photo essey by Jennifer Zhou, composed by Phil Doglis. Keep going, and never give up, you will always find there are people who love your work.

You show much promise as an architectural photographer in this collection, Jennifer. While devoid of people, this bridge is the work of man's genius, and you have captured that genius in your use of perspective, detail and form. Some of your images remind me of Margaret Bourke-White's industrial photography from the early 1930s. You have also placed the bridge into contexts that define its scale, use, and relationship to the cityscape and to nature. The most important contribution you make here is cumulative. The point of this series of images is the sum of its parts. While no single image says it all, all of your images say it well.

Oh, boy, Jennifer, do you bring back a lot of good memories with this gallery. My wife, Barbara, and I lived in Burnaby for five years and worked in Vancouver during that time. I took a lot of photos back then with a 35mm camera and have albums full of those memories as well. Your photos bring us up to present day Vancouver, and we like all of them very much. good photos. you love composing images. it reads clearly. the lions gate bridge appeared to lose the serenity it offered when the string of glaring lights given to the province of bc were installed onto the suspension. stopping in stanley park was not quite the same after that. bridge-gazing lost its charm, in my opinion.

Hi Jennifer, You should be thankful this many people are trying to help you with your project. However, I want to say something to onyx regarding his comments. I've seen many people's photos about the Lion's gate bridge, but I have to say, Jennifer has done an excellent job to capture some of the beauties of this bridge, compair to many others, even some professional photographers. However, as an amateur, her job is not perfect, manybe even not anywhere near there, but that's exactly her strong point because she has put her passion into her photos. Lion's gate bridge is not easy to photograph because it's so boring and lifeless. We need to encourage her for excellent job done as an amateur, and wish she one day become a peofessional.

匆匆花了一个小时浏览你的Gallery,可能说得并不准确，但既然是建议，那我就挑不好的说咯，希望别生气。从你的摄影作品看来，你在技术层面应该是比较成熟了，但觉得片子中能给人留下很深印象的并不多。我想原因是还不够精致。决定一张片子精不精致的因素很多，象暴光，构图这些技术细节，还有就是片子背后的东西。主题摄影的中心应该是主题，所以在选片上应该是有讲究的，以你的这组片子为例，我没有从片子中看到太多你自己的想法或则是你自己的想法也不明确或有些混乱，虽然有几张片子的视角比较新颖，但我想这跟你是个MM有关，其他的基本都是平常视角的堆砌，说得过点，别人也能拍出那样的片子。我不清楚你自己对这组片子是怎么定位的，风光或建筑摄影，还是别的？如果是风光摄影，那么你的片子还能更精致些，比如挑个更漂亮的日子去按快门。风光要拍好不容易，一方面多看看大师们的作品，另一方面可能就只有靠时间去积累了。现在说说你这组片子里的问题吧。可能有些是你自己不太注意或疏忽的方面。比如说21186056.3.jpg这张，从技术数据上看，10秒的快门你应该是用了三脚架的，但为什么水平面不平了？这可是风光摄影的大忌呀。21186053.1.jpg也是这个问题。21186054.2.jpg这张是这组里我唯一喜欢的一张，很有意思。这么说是指它跟其他的片子很不一样，也是为什么我说我没有从这组片子里看出你自己的想法。我想在这张里你按下快门应该和其他的片子是不一样的，所以它应该不属于这组以大桥建筑主题的片子里。这张片子唯一不好的地方是那眩光，我对数码相机没有研究，也不清楚你用的是CANON的什么头，但200MM，F19的光圈应该可以稍微挪挪机位避免它。唠唠叨叨数落了半天，说得不对的请包含。其实以前也看过你的片子，喜欢。摄影这东西要想提高，多听听别人的意见应该是没错的，在下学浅，也只能说到这了。你将自己的作品贴到ROLIA养了大家的眼福，但想提高，还是应该也将片子贴到一些专门谈摄影的论坛上去，那里的评论更专业，也对你更有帮助。我这里给你两个专门谈片子的华人论坛，你可以去看看。江湖色 http://paowang.com/photo/ 视平线 http://chinesephotographers.net/
