A simple life calls for big dreams, Shanghai, China, 2006

I always impressed and admire people who live simple lives yet enjoy every bit of them. This optimistic street vender warms my heart. He could never afford to own a car such as this by selling veggies, but it doesn't bother him at all. He seems content to live for this moment of pleasure.

Nice social contrast in your image! Maybe he secretly owns one at home?

Behind the outer glossy sheen of the economic boom this work identify the inner side of the cultural upheaval with a humorous presentation. In dreams one can fulfill all wishes...

Those three baskets are important to the car wheel, it is a key composition queue. I like his look and hand...as if this is really his ;-)K

The bamboo baskets look like ahto tire rims on their sides, that's a little like those inverted truck tires about the village world that are turned into water tubs and trash tins....yes, the Chinese farmer's produce is certainly being
produced enough to undercut the prices of all his neighbours also....I don't know what that produces....if it was supplied to an undersupplied market, that's a benefit....The kiltish tartan look of his apron is a vision, eh?

As ever, images which describe China better than any words could do. Wonderful.

****Ah, the simple life. A farmer, nude, except for his apron, his veggies by his side, cradles a shiny new car with a big smile. If it is his, he must sell a lot of veggies. If he wishes it was his, he is going to have to sell a lot more of them. Once again, I see Jen's favorite theme of the Two Chinas -- the agricultural past and the potential affluence of the future. Well executed -- much food for thought, and a touch of humor as well. It made me smile.

He seems pretty content with his simple life. Im afraid when he fulfills his dream of the car, he may not have such simple happiness any more....
anyway, it is not the destination, but the journey that counts...
