NGC6520 and the Inkspot

Loftus, NSW

A closer look at the pairing of Barnard 86 and NGC6520. B86 is a Bok globule also known as the Inkspot, a cold dark dust cloud that's probably the remains of the birthplace of NGC6520 and may still be birthing new stars. Both lie about 6,000 light-years distant, and far in front of the background stars that are closer to 25,000 light-years away.
