Clusters and nebulae in the LMC bar

Loftus, NSW

Clouds of stars, rich clusters and wisps of pinkish emission nebula are scattered across the field, looking towards the heart of the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Filling much of the view is a brighter mass of stars running from upper right to lower left - the bar of the galaxy. Scattered across it are many clusters and nebulae. Two nebulae dominate the central region - the large S-shaped nebula right of centre is NGC1910, and is sprinkled with young star clusters and massive blue stars. Directly above it is the yellowish rich (globular?) cluster NGC1916. Bluish open cluster NGC1903 lies to the upper left of the nebula. Left of centre is the nebula and cluster complex of NGC1877. The brilliant dense open cluster NGC1856 lies to the lower left. Towards the upper right is another nebula, NGC1918, sometimes called a supernova remnant.

Focus was imperfect for much of the night, and has affected the sharpness of this image. I took 72 frames (6 hours), and kept only 17!
