Having a person stand nearby helps to give a better perspective to the stone-work. I wish I had done more of that.
What amazed me about the sites in Peru was that each passing civilization's technological expertise seemed to be diminishing. The base stone-work (the oldest work) seemed to display stone working skills that were lost to later civilizations. Huge perfectly cut stones represented the oldest work; later, smaller but still perfectly cut stone were used. The most recent work is crude stone rubble stacked without regard to artistic quality.
