Angel Island, California

This "is the original fog-warning bell that sat at the end of the landing pier.
Years ago, it disappeared from Angel Island and was found in a San Diego junkyard.
The two-ton bell was restored and returned to the island, first as a marker
at Ayala Cove and later to its present site in China Cove."

Actually the bell never left the island! Many years after the station closed the bell was moved to Ayala Cove and was placed on display for picnickers. After the Immigration Station was reopened for visitors in the 1980s, the bell was brought back to its original home.

Actually that story is unfortunately, only a urban legend which the state park rangers have tried to crush over the years. In fact the bell never left the island! In the 1950s the bell was moved to Ayala Cove and was on display for the picnickers which frolicked on the lawn in front of the visitor center. Then in the 1980s, after the US Immigration Station was restored, the bell was moved back to it's original site. To bad that the San Diego story isn't true though...it would have indeed be fascinating.

They should research how the bell got to San Diego. That would make an interesting story.
