Interesting conversation. I do a lot of street work, but my bird shots are also less than nice I must admit.

Hey Andrew, I do agree, in a way, with you. I have tried to take photographs of birds, as you know, and I am in constant awe of your work with the species. You do have a good touch with them and as well candid and street photography. I would like to think that I do have some ability in the portrait and candid/street portrait area but my bird taking photo ability is sub par at best, occasionally I do get lucky. Being good in one area doesn’t necessarily equate to ability in another. The technical side helps but capturing the expression of a swan or any other bird is much harder, IMO, than taking the photo of a preschooler. Preschoolers can be draw into conversation which makes them easier to photograph. A bird, however, will fly away and possibly drop something on you if you start chatting with it. Although, a preschooler will occasionally have a temper fit if you say something bad about Barbie and her break up with Ken. Also, I have more experience taking portraits and candid/street work than bird photos so my experience is not there and the comfort zone in not there.

Nonetheless, I do think you are quite good at this.

Helo Chempilot - no I am not a natural and I'm afraid especially on the bird photography front I am struggling. Some of these look good but when you see some of the top work by bird photographers, amateur and pro,the output is stunning. You know class when you see it. Taking candids is not helped by bird photography unless I have developed a degree of ability to "stalk my prey" but a lot of the Hanoi shots were taken by engaging the subject. People not used to digital are often delighed to see the immediate result an will enjoy the picture with you. I never take the picture if it is clear someone does not wish to be photographed, pure courtesy. I just find people-watching wonderful. We are all so different and exploring and taking photos is very rewarding. Thanks for yor visit. Best wishes, Andrew
