The Helmsman's View

A quite limited view with even just a few sails set.
With all the canvas aloft only the binnacle in the foreground could be used for finding the direction.
The binnacle contains a ship's magnetic compass, mounted in gimbals to keep it level while the ship pitched from waves.
It also contained an oil lamp for navigation at night. The iron balls on either side compensate for magnetic deviation.
