Emigrating to New Zealand

A display aboard the "Star of India" named the "Euterpe" in the 19th Century, shows what conditions were like for emigrants en-route from England to New Zealand.
In late 1871 she began twenty-five years of carrying passengers and freight in the New Zealand emigrant trade, each voyage going eastward around the world before returning to England.
The fastest of her 21 passages to New Zealand took 100 days, the longest 143 days.
She also made ports of call in Australia, California, and Chile.
A baby was born on one of those trips en route to New Zealand, and was given the middle name "Euterpe".

I can't imagine living back then. Somehow I think people were a lot tougher. Interesting shot.

Interesting story and good capture. I can't even imagine what these people must have gone through. V.

I wonder if the quarters were as pleasant and comfortable as these appear...I somehow doubt it...though the earlier convict ships most certainly were far worse. My Great Grandparents emigrated from the U.K. in the mid 1800's with 2 daughters, but my grandmother was born here in Australia...no doubt they came in one just like this.

Walter - both my grandparents came out to NZ in 1800's on ships like these. (They all met and married in NZ) What a terrible trips they must have been. Not for me.
And Cameron's yacht (Sanya) and the other Volvo yachts are due tomorrow and Sunday - they are all heading for the top of NZ now... It's been a long leg for them all and they leave for Brazil next Sunday 18 Mar. We are so looking forward to seeing him again...

cramped quarters yet likely better than most...at least these folks had some space and actual beds...a three month voyage does seem arduous...although ample reward was at the end in wonderful New Zealand...excellent photography Walter...V

Very interesting. I visited a similar exhibition in Cove, Ireland of emigrants from Ireland to the United states. V

Interesting bit of history! Well documented here, Walter.
Hopefully the new start was worth this hardship of relocating.
