Holosteric Barometer

My wife gave this beautiful late 19th Century Ships Barometer to me as an early birthday present. (My birthday is in October!)
It was made in France for the Dutch Market.
I'm a bit puzzled by the scale going from 71 to 81. Does anybody know about this kind of measurement?
I am only familiar with inches and millibar scales.

Update: Vatorman solved this one, the scale in cm.

Nice present, I'd say! The brass shows up well in the image. As to scale: 1 atmosphere = 1.013E6 dynes/cmsq = 76 cm Hg . So I think your scale reads the latter, centimeters of mercury. V

Very very neat. The scale is in centimeters of mercury. Millimeters of mercury was actually the more common unit, but this allows to drop one zero. Type the following into a Google search engine: "1000 mbar in mm Hg". It's about 750 mm Hg or 75 cm Hg. 1 mm Hg was also called 1 Torr.

Beautiful shot of a lovely piece of work. I love having a barometer in the home, I am sure that mine gives me a better forecast than the 'TV Weather' LOL
A thing of beauty is a joy forever ... BV

Great detail and comp, Walter. A beautiful instrument. I think the lower scale is degrees Fahrenheit. Here's a link that has a similar barometer:http://www.scientificcollectables.com/page_enlarge964.htm

(And happy birthday to you)
