As this sign says, it was the fragile nature of the giant sequoia's wood that saved it from the lumberjack's guillotine - it simply cost too much to make too little from the fragile giant to justify the time & expense, and so the great trees were largely spared, and we future generations are able to enjoy what John Muir first immortalized in his writings a century ago.
