Altavilla Irpina

Guiseppe Barone, my maternal great-grandfather, left this humble mountaintop agricultural community a century ago. Elevation 4,000 feet! When we researched the families in the Archivio di Stato, the various State archives, invariably our male forebears' occupation was listed either as agricultura or contadina. Either way you spell it, it still means farmer. Amazing! Avellino is located about an hours drive up a steep, verdant, cloud-besotted mountain from Avellino.

My maternal Grandmother was a Gallasso who owned her home here. I was wondering if anyone could remember her and where she lived. I was just under 2 when we left for Australia. I am now 55 :)
I understand her home was badly affected by the earthquake several years ago. I would really LOVE someone to contact me with information about her & her family. Photos would be a REAL bonus.

My father was born in Alta Villa in 1883, came to America in 1902. I visited there in 1998, it is such a beautiful place with a lot of history. Gloria Cinelli Gannon

My Grandfather, Guiseppe Rotondi was born in Altavilla Irpina and came to the US in 1903.. Thanks for posting a picture.. I would love to see the place where he was born and see if there are any family members left..

My family too is from Altavilla, Di Troia/De Troja is my surname. My cousin just visited yesterday and said the people are very helpfull with the history and inquiries.

My Paternal Grandfather, Francesco Caruso, was born in Altavilla Irpina. He and his sister Sally and their parents, Vito and Carmela came to America circa 1927.

Well, we must all be cousins! My mom & brother only spent a few hours here, but it seemed like a three block town, really small, so that anyone who came from there has to be related, somehow. Will dig around to see if I did take more photos, but I think this was it...

My parents are also from Altavilla. They miss it and would love to go back for a visit. Do you have any more photo's besides the ones you posted.

My dad's family come from Altavillar Irpina, too, and it is a truly beautiful little town. Spectacular views, great architecture. A true pleasure!
