LLYN Y DYWARCHEN
Dilek, my son's fiancee, at the tiny fishing lake, Llyn y Dywarchen. This secret little gem is set
amid dramatic scenery. A few steps through a gate in the stone wall and suddenly you will see a stunning view across the lake with Snowdon in the distance. It is a very beautiful and peaceful place, in fact it was nominated by the public as one of the 60 Wonders of Snowdonia.

NANTLLE VALLEY
A now sparsely populated glacial valley running between Rhyd Ddu and the coast.
Roofing slates excavated at the nearby Roman fort of Segontium, originated from the valley and by the eighteenth century, Cilgwyn quarry was well-known for its brightly red slates.Unlike the larger enterprises run in the area, the slate quarries situated in Nantlle were run independently and on a much smaller scale, but the valley was still one of the world-leading producers of slate in the nineteenth century. The open cast mining and innovative transportation systems they used were of great interest to mining engineers from France and Germany who repeatedly visited the quarries from the 1850s up to the 1880s and took detailed notes to encourage the installation of similarly efficient systems in their home nations, an early form of industrial espionage!

WINNER : CHURCHES,CHAPELS & CATHEDRALS UK GALLERY
All Saints......a tiny chapel, serving a hamlet of a farm and a few houses, near Wiston. Designated as a 'chapel-of-ease', it was not allowed a font, steeple or, originally a bell...although a small belltower was eventually permitted. Reached only by a footpath through a wooded dell and surrounded by fields, a service is held there monthly.
Built in 1150, although there are records of a previous church on site from 791 AD.

CHURCH NAVE & CHANCEL
Interior of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which was made redundant in 1979.
This isolated church is now cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust, a simple sandstone building built at the end of a lane, near Ashington, in about 1220. Its bell, cast in about 1200, is one of the oldest survivors in Sussex.
The interior was remodelled in the early eighteenth century. Between the chancel and the nave is a large wooden screen erected in about 1700 which bears the Royal Arms of Queen Anne. The tall pulpit with reading desk is rare, and the pine box-pews with high backs and lockable ends survive in unusually excellent condition. Unlike many ancient churches in Sussex, it was not restored in the 19th century, and its interior has been called the finest example in Sussex of how many must have looked before the Victorian restorers. It is now a Grade I listed building for its architectural and historical importance.

SOUTHWARK BRIDGE
The bridge was opened in 1921.
A previous bridge was built on the site in 1819, and was originally known as Queen Street Bridge. It was then notable for having the longest cast iron span, 240 feet, ever made. The bridge was a financial failure and closed in the late 1800s because it attracted very little vehicular traffic as other nearby bridges were toll-free, and it suffered from approaches that were too steep for horses drawing loads.
The current bridge is a Grade II listed structure.

Two of our feral kittens......
Our feral cat Smokey...see PAD 30/1 & 20/5/07.... has brought his family into our garden now. First his wife...a few weeks ago....then a week ago we first spotted 2 kittens....then next day 3....and now there are 4! They are all grey and one is fluffy just like Mum. She comes to the back door to feed, but is extremely nervous. The kittens have ventured further out each day and now spend most of the evening frolicing in our driveway. Today they have been around all day, letting us talk to them from our windows but they runaway when we get to about 6 feet away outside.....except one that has ventured to the back door with Mum to feed. We have high hopes of taming at least some of them.

A ST NICHOLAS CHURCH 554
The castle is now a ruin, but its church - the oldest Norman church in Sussex - is intact, and still in regular use. Situated on a hill above the village, the church was built at the same time as the castle in 1073, by William de Braose. Originally a chapel for the castle, it became the parish church in 1250, but it declined with the village as its harbour on the River Adur silted up. The church was used as a gun emplacement for attacking the castle during the Civil War in 1642, and was ruinous by the mid-18th Century. It was restored in the 19th century and the church now consists only of a small west porch/vestry, nave and the tower, which functions as the chancel. There is one 14th century bell
